Coalport Canal: The Little Waterway That Powered an Empire

In the curve of the Ironbridge Gorge, a narrow strip of water glides past the Coalport China Museum. The reflections are perfect: bottle kilns, trees, and the sky. Today it feels timeless, but this calm half-mile of canal once throbbed with industry. It was the last, vital link between Shropshire’s furnaces and the wider world.
A Vision Carved from Clay and Iron
The canal owes its existence to William Reynolds, the 18th-century ironmaster who looked at Shropshire’s rough landscape and saw a challenge worth conquering. With the guidance of engineer William Jessop, he planned a waterway that could climb and fall with the land itself, using inclined planes instead of traditional locks.
A public competition in 1788 offered a prize for the best design. Henry Williams and James Loudon won with their ingenious plan for water-powered boat cradles — a system so efficient it was later copied elsewhere. Construction began that same year, and by 1792 the Shropshire Canal stretched from Donnington Wood through Stirchley and Blists Hill to the River Severn at Coalport. The final, riverside reach became known as the Coalport Canal.
Where River and Industry Met
At its lower end, the canal met the Severn beside what is now the museum. A lock was built to connect the two waterways, but it proved short-lived. The canal’s squat tub boats were too unstable for the Severn’s fast current, and the broad Severn trows were far too wide for the canal. The lock was soon filled in and replaced by wharves and warehouses, where men loaded and unloaded cargo by crane and handcart.
Here, raw materials from the Shropshire plateau met the river trade to Bristol and London. Coal, clay, and iron arrived by canal; porcelain left in straw-lined crates from the Coalport China Works, founded around 1795. Upstream, the Madeley Wood Brick and Tile Works sent out bricks and tiles along tramways that tipped directly into waiting boats. Overhead hung a haze of smoke and steam; underfoot, the towpath shook with hooves and cartwheels.
And towering above it all was the Hay Inclined Plane — a steep twin-tracked slope that dropped 207 feet to the river. Tub boats, cradled on wheeled platforms, were raised or lowered by the balance of water and gravity. To 18th-century eyes, it was a marvel of engineering.
Boom, Bust, and Quiet Water

For half a century, the Coalport Canal thrived. Engineers from across Europe came to study its system of inclined planes. But by the mid-1800s, steam railways were overtaking the waterways. In 1849, the Shropshire Union Railways and Canal Company leased the network, and by 1857, ownership had passed to the London and North Western Railway. After repeated bank collapses and flooding, most of the system was closed in 1858, with railway lines laid along much of the old canal bed.
Still, the Coalport stretch worked on, carrying coal to the Blists Hill Furnaces until 1912. In its final years, it still handled more than 29,000 tons of coal annually — an impressive figure for a canal already considered obsolete. It was officially abandoned in 1944, left to silt and memory.
Rebirth in Reflection

By the 1960s, the canal was a ghost of its former self — overgrown, half-filled, forgotten. Then the Dawley Development Corporation began to rescue what remained of the Gorge’s industrial past. The Hay Inclined Plane was restored in 1968, its rails relaid in 1975. Between 1974 and 1976, the Coalport Canal was drained, repuddled with clay, and re-watered.
When the water returned, it transformed the scene. The Coalport China Museum opened along its banks, and the towpath once again followed the line of the old boats. Today, the canal is part of the South Telford Heritage Trail, linking visitors to the story of how ingenuity and determination once turned this quiet valley into the birthplace of modern industry.
Stand by its edge now, and you can still feel that rhythm — the soft glide of water, the echo of hooves, and the ghost of a rope creaking against the bank.
How the Coalport Canal Worked
The Coalport Canal may have been short, but it was designed with remarkable precision. Its traffic moved in tub boats — squat iron vessels about sixteen feet long and six feet wide, each able to carry around five tons of coal, clay, or porcelain. The boats often travelled in trains, drawn along the towpath by horses or wound through the water by hand-cranked winches.
To handle the steep Shropshire terrain, engineers used inclined planes instead of locks. The most impressive was the Hay Inclined Plane, dropping 207 feet from Blists Hill down to the Severn. Each tub boat sat in a wheeled cradle, raised or lowered by the pull of water and gravity. When a full boat descended, its weight helped haul an empty one back up — an elegant, water-powered counterbalance.

At the end of the canal, a short lock connected it directly to the River Severn. It was an ambitious idea but impractical in use. The canal’s flat-bottomed boats were too fragile for the Severn’s swift current, while the large Severn trows were far too broad to enter the canal. The lock was soon filled in and replaced by wharves and warehouses, where goods were transferred by hand or crane between canal and river boats.
For decades, this tiny stretch handled the full output of the Gorge — coal from Madeley, tiles from Blists Hill, and fine china from the Coalport works. Half a mile of water, yet it connected Shropshire’s industry to the world.
Legacy
The Coalport Canal may only measure half a mile, but its reach was vast. It carried the raw power of the Gorge to the sea, inspired visiting engineers, and helped turn a rural valley into the beating heart of the Industrial Revolution.
Now its waters move quietly, reflecting kilns and sky instead of smoke and flame. Yet in that stillness lies its triumph: a canal once built for work, now kept for wonder.
