What the Trust does
Most visitors come to the Gorge for the iron. What they walk through to reach it — the hanging woods, the coppice, the wildflower meadows and the network of steep paths and steps — is looked after by the Severn Gorge Countryside Trust.
The Trust manages land on both sides of the river, keeping the woodland healthy, the paths open and the ground stable in a valley that has been slipping since long before the bridge was built. Ground stability is not a small matter here: the same slopes that gave the Gorge its shape still move, and much of the Trust's work is quiet, unglamorous and essential.
Where you can walk
Trust land takes in Lloyds Coppice above Jackfield, Benthall Edge on the Broseley side, Dale Coppice and Lincoln Hill above Coalbrookdale, and a string of smaller green spaces between them. Paths are steep in places and can be slippery after rain — boots rather than trainers.

Volunteering and support
The Trust runs regular volunteer work parties — practical conservation days doing coppicing, scrub clearance, path repair and meadow management. It is one of the easiest ways to learn the Gorge properly. Details and dates are on severngorge.org.uk.
